City of Blades
by Robert Jackson Bennett

City of Blades is the sequel to City of Stairs, but takes place over a decade later. General Turyin Mulaghesh, hero of the final battle in City of Stairs has been pulled out of retirement to investigate the disappearance of a government agent in the continental city of Voortyashtan, where there is both a military installation investigating the discovery of new super-conductive ore and a massive project to dredge and rebuild the harbor. Like all continental cities in this world, Voortyashtan was significantly wrecked by and still reeling in the aftermath of the demise of its ruling deity, Voortya, the goddess of war and death. Along the way, Turyin finds herself confronted with the darker parts of her past and discovers that the demise of a deity leaves behind unforseen complications.
City of Blades is an exciting, well-plotted thriller that contains several satisfying surprises. The world-building remains very good, and the characters are great. I loved Mulaghesh as a main character - she's a very focused bad-ass without turning one-dimensional. It is mainly through her that Bennett explores themes of the nature of war and the crimes it engenders, and the consequences of conquest and colonialism.
