by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
The Angel's Game is the second book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books trilogy, but it is more of a prequel to The Shadow of the Wind, taking place about 20 years earlier. The Angel's Game is the story of David Martin, a young, struggling writer of pulp serials living in a strange abandoned mansion who accepts a too-good-to-be-true offer from a mysterious publisher to write a narrative book that can serve as the basis for a new religion. As he gets deeper into this project, David finds himself drawn into noir intrigue filled with menace and perhaps a whiff of the supernatural.
While not quite as good as its predecessor, The Angel's Game was still a very engrossing read. The plot has many twists and turns, and the narrative does not quite answer all the questions it raises. Is David a reliable narrator? Is all of this real? Who exactly is the mysterious publisher? The writing is just as gorgeous, though, and Zafon continues to make Barcelona a place of mystery and wonder, and almost a character in itself.
