This novel picks up directly where Lirael left off. The mysterious necromantic power Same and Lirael are fighting turns out to be the freeing of an ancient and destructive power that could annihilate the entire world. Stopping it involves discovering old magics, learning many hidden things about their world, and coming to terms with their own natures and abilities.
Nix tells this compelling story through a well-balanced mix of exciting plot and drawn-out character development. I especially liked the way Sam grew and matured from the spoiled, somewhat whiny prince of the previous novel into a braver, more confident person who was more comfortable with himself and better able to confront and deal with the problems and dangers he faced. Lirael is still my favorite character - she takes on her new role of Abhorsen-in-Waiting with determination and commitment.
