by David Brian Huron
This book was very cool. Aimed explicitly at experienced musicians who are familiar with part-writing and counterpoint, Voice Leading: The Science Behind a Musical Art looks at the standard part writing rules all music student are taught through the lens of the science of human hearing and auditory perception. Huron compares the rules and conventions of part-writing with what we know about how we hear and parse sound and music to find the relationships between them. Huron writes in a very accessible way, always providing just the right amount of information when it comes to describing scientific experiments and phenomena. The results are fascinating, and serve to beautifully illuminate how a lot of music works and why we learn part-writing the we do.
