Apr. 16th, 2018 09:25 pmThe Life And Works Of Lili Boulanger
by Leonie Rosenstiel
This straightforward biography of early 20th century French composer Lili Boulanger is well-written and very informative. Also, very necessary, as Lili Boulanger was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome, an important composer in the Impressionist tradition, and the sister of renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger. Her gender and untimely death at just 24 has made her unjustly neglected. My only two criticisms are that each chapter ends with a couple of summary paragraphs that reiterate the main content and points of the chapter, and which seem unnecessarily didactic. Also, the musical examples are often rather poor quality scans.
