This was fun and made for a good binge read. Through a freak storm, badly-timed accident, and bad luck, astronaut Mark Watney finds himself stranded on Mars. He's only mostly screwed and must figure out how to use what he has to survive until he can be rescued, Luckily, Mark is clever when it comes to problem-solving and very persistent when it comes to carrying out his plans. He also has a good, if slightly sophomoric, sense of humor.
The pacing is very good - there is plenty of suspense and excitement, but not too much. Weir also has a knack for including all the science (and there is a lot of science) in a way that is neither boring nor incomprehensible for the non-scientist. Weir also deftly handles the weaving together of Watney's logs with the story of all the NASA personnel working to bring him back alive. The only thing The Martian lacks is any sort of character development, or explorations of anyone's inner psyche. That's just not the kind of book this is.
