by Elizabeth Hand
This is the third and last (so far) of the Cass Neary novels. The story takes place right on the heels of the conclusion of Available Light. Cass has fled Iceland for London, where she soon finds herself entangled with dangerous people involved in drug dealing and the illegal sale of antiquities. After three of these people wind up dead, Cass runs from London to Cornwall, and finds herself hip-deep in the mysteries left behind by Iron Age Britain and a band of experimental-film-making hippies.
Hard Light was an engaging read. I really liked the nod to experimental 1970s film and wished Hand had gotten more into that side of things. I also wished that we had gotten to spend more time with some of the characters, especially Poppy, Morven, and Tamsin. I did appreciate the way some elements of this book hearkened back to things from Generation Loss: a teenage girl who looks to Cass for an escape from her current life, an aging and difficult artist, the aftermath of an attempt at a free-love counter-culture utopia.
