The final volume of The Long Price Quartet wraps up the story of the disintegration of empires. In this book, both the Galt and Khaiate empires are left crippled in the aftermath of their war. Otah must find a way to make common cause with his former enemies, the Galts, in order to secure a future for both their peoples. Meanwhile, Maati, one of the two last living poets, is attempting to repair things by bringing andat back into the world. Both Otah and Maati have to grapple with the price each of their methods carries, and the conflicts they create.
