Dead Man's Ransom
by Ellis Peters

This is the ninth Brother Cadfael mystery, and it's a good one - one of the few where I really didn't know who the murderer was before Cadfael figured it out. In this one the war raging between Stephen and Matilda become more of a factor in the lives of the people of Shrewsbury, and the Welsh are finally drawn into the edges of the conflict. The relationships among many of the characters are also more complicated in Dead Man's Ransom, particularly when it comes to the star-crossed lovers that are a pretty standard feature of Cadfael novels. This was definitely one of the most layered and nuanced of the Cadfael mysteries I have read so far.
