Every Day Is for the Thief
by Teju Cole

This novel does not particularly read like a novel. In following an unnamed Nigerian ex-pat narrator as her visits Lagos after an absence of 15 years, this book is much more like a memoir or travelogue. There is not much of a plot, just a series of episodes in which the narrator visits various places in the city and interacts with family and old friends. Although the descriptions of transportation reminded me a lot of [livejournal.com profile] r_ness's posts, the writing was overall vivid yet distant. Cole doesn't really give you enough to feel emotionally attached to any of the characters, even the narrator. On the other hand, this tone worked very well with the narrator's experience of Lagos, which was a mixture of the very familiar and the very new.
