This book had some of the jewel-like quality of Patricia McKillip's books, although it is harder-edged and sharper. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, The Passion tells the stories of Henri, a French soldier, and Villanelle, a boatman's daughter and card-dealer at the Casino in Venice. Their tales converge in Moscow, during Napoleon's ill-fated winter invasion of Russia. Their stories apart and together explore the dark and light of passion and obsession and what they cause one to risk, gain, and lose. It's an odd, dream-like, and wonderful book that mixes history and fairy-tale together beautifully.
