Oct. 7, 2004. morning
I slept in a bit today - I was pretty tired from yesterday and I had a headache from the oncoming rain. The Raphael is indeed very comfy - they even provide fluffy bathrobes.
I spent the morning walking around the Country Club Plaza area. The Plaza is an upscale shopping center, with the kind of stores you would find on or around Newbury Street in Boston. The architecture isSpanish-style and really quite beautiful. There are lots of fountains and statues, too. I was able to scout out places to eat and found an ATM for my bank.
Walking out past the Plaza and towards UMKC I saw a couple of large parks. I may try to stroll through them on Saturday when the weather will be better and I will have some free time. and I saw more fountains, including a huge one with equestrian statues and colored lights. I walked by a diner, too. It had a drive-through window. There were also plenty of apartment buildings, some of which looked very nice.
When I started back towards the Plaza and my hotel, it started thundering and lightning. Big forks were arcing acriss the sky. There is something much more expansive about the landscape here. There's a larger sense of space. I guess it's because it's flatter and more open, and there's no seashore.
