I have decided not to apply to UC Davis. The program is good, but I just can't get excited about any of the people on their composition faculty. I've listened to some of the music from their faculty, and I'm sorry to say that it didn't interest me. Pretty standard academic atonality all around. For the record, I don't necessarily have to like something to find it interesting. I didn't really like a couple of the pieces I heard from faculty of U of Illinois, but I still thought that the composers had interesting ideas and approaches. It's just not worth the work of putting together an application and portfolio if I can't find any enthusiasm for studying with anyone in the department.
