by Patricia McKillip
This is the fourth book by Patricia McKillip I have read. I love her writing. Most of her books are short fantasy novels that have the flavor of a fairy tale about them. But these are fairy tales with the kind of emotional depth and complexity you don't put in children's stories. Her lyrical prose is beautiful and evocative - I can always feel the places in her books. I'm not going to go into the details of the plot, because to do so with this or any of McKillip's books would be to both say too much and too little. I will say that so far her themes seem to deal with the character's need and struggle to transcend the past.
