On Saturday, Other Kenjari and I trekked out to Melrose for the Polymnia Choral Society's Christmas concert, featuring the ever-wonderful [livejournal.com profile] pantsie. It was a lovely concert. Polymnia is a non-professional community chorus, but they are quite good. I also really love that they tackle ambitious things and do a good job with them. Like the Vivaldi Gloria with which they opened the program, for instance. The chorus was solid, and [livejournal.com profile] pantsie sounded great. She and I did this at our 2006 recital, and she sounded even better on Saturday. Wow.
The second half of the concert opened with a lovely piece by the late Daniel Pinkham, "Evergreen". The next piece, "Seven Joys of Christmas", by Kirke Mechem was a good arrangement of various yuletide songs that really suited the chorus well. Mechem did an especially nice job melding "God Bless the master of this house" with "Joy to the World". This piece was followed by excerpts from Messiah (by Handel, but you knew that). The highlight of the excerpts was [livejournal.com profile] pantsie's performance of "O Thou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion". The concert concluded with a few traditional Christmas carols.

Thanks for the kind words. It wasn't a perfect evening by any stretch, but the music was heartfelt. I really liked the Pinkham piece - I felt like the program started to pull together at that point for the choir.

Thank you for being there, too! Melrose is one of those stupid you-can't-get-there-from-here sorts of places.
