On Wednesday I went to a very good concert of contemporary music featuring violist Ashleigh Gordon.

Scintillation II - Anthony Green
This piece for viola and cello was really fascinating. There were times when the two instruments seemed to almost be playing two separate pieces simultaneously, and other times when the parts melded perfectly, but the music was consistently successful.

viola in my life 3 - Morton Feldman
The performers did a beautiful job with this piece for viola and piano. Unfortunately, despite generally liking Feldman's music, I just wasn't in a Feldman mood on Wednesday evening, so this work just didn't do it for me at the time.

Rumi Settings - Augusta Read Thomas
This piece for violin and viola was intense and a little bit abstract, but still really enjoyable.

Cardiogram - Stefanie Lubkowski
These two movements (from a work in four movements) for viola and percussion, written by my sister, was quite good. The percussion writing was solid and fit very well with the viola. I liked the first movement, Gamma Camera, the best, with its subtle, gradually constructed groove. The other movement, Palpitations, was really interesting, and I think it will sound even better in the context of the full piece.

Duo for Viola and Violoncello - Walter Piston
I learned theory using Piston's harmony textbook and it has continued to be an important reference source for me, but this is the first time I had heard any of Piston's work. I really liked this piece - it was written in a very early-twentieth century style, in the vein of Copland and Barber.
