Yet another concert
Oct. 25th, 2008 10:54 pmOn Friday night, I attended the Cappella Clausura concert. They are an early music group centered around an all-female vocal ensemble (
wavyarms is a member). At this concert, the singers were accompanied by two viola da gambas and a portative organ.
I found this performance particularly interesting because they were doing the music of Vittoria/Rafaella Aleotti, a late Renaissance composer from Italy. In 1593, a set of madrigals was published under the name Vittoria Aleotti, and a set of sacred songs was published under the name Rafaella Aleotti. There is some scholarly debate as to whether Vittoria and Rafaella were sisters, or the same person (Rafaella thus being the name Vittoria took when she became a nun).
The music itself was quite beautiful. The sacred music was in a slightly different and more conservative style than the livelier secular madrigals, but all the pieces did have enough similarities that they could indeed be by the same woman.
