by Kenneth Chalmers
This biography is part of the Phaidon series of books about 20th century composers. Chalmers provides a solid, engaging overview of Bartok's life and work. While this book does not go into technical detail or provide extensive analysis of Bartok's music, it does provide a good grounding in Bartok's primary compositional materials and methods, as well a sense of his development. Chalmers also gives a lot of information about Bartok's ethnomusicological activities. This book filled in the gaps in my knowledge of Bartok and has given me a good foundation from which read more analytical and probing works on Bartok and his music.
