Yesterday was Other Kenjari and I's fifth anniversary, which we celebrated in a rather low key way by having a lovely dinner at the Fireplace and then going out to see Wall-E. Dinner was excellent, as always. The Fireplace is turning out to be our favorite restaurant for special occasions. The food is great and the staff are generally quite good about accommodating my dietary needs.
Wall-E was wonderful - Pixar have really outdone themselves this time. The animation is just gorgeous - highly detailed and, well, real-looking. There are well-done references to Nausicaa, 2001, Star Wars, and Star Trek. I think this movie goes deeper than some of Pixar's previous work. The story contains a lot of points about the environment and what we're doing to it, corporate power, and the less pleasant ramifications of the seduction of technology. Pixar also finds the perfect balance of deep themes combined with a very fun movie with plenty of adventure and sweet romance.
Also, don't get to the theater late. The pre-movie short, "Presto", about a magician and his bunny, is hilarious. I laughed so hard I pulled a muscle in my shoulder.

A Nausicaa reference ? When? How did I miss that?

The scene where Eve first flies around reminded us both of Nausicaa in particular, and the way Miyazaki does flight in general.

OK-- so not so much a quotation as a "feel", then? That totally makes sense-- the Pixar guys and the Ghibli guys are big fans of one another. There was a even a Pixar exhibit at the Ghibli museum when J and I went to Tokyo. :)

Happy Anniversary! And thanks for the mini-review. I usually love Pixar, but I wasn't really interested in this - every time I see an ad, all I can think is, "Number 5 is alive!" But it sound like it's worth the effort to see in theaters.
