This novel was an average, pleasant read. It's about Nazneen, a woman from a poor Bangladeshi village who gets married off to Chanu, an older man who lives in London. Nazneen, who has very little education and almost no knowledge of the wider world, gradually adapts to living in the London immigrant community, sheds her passivity, and builds a life for herself and her two daughters. I think what kept me from really getting into this book was Nazneen's passivity. Even though the main theme of the novel is her journey away from that trait and a towards a more active participation in her life and its direction, the narrative kept her passive for too long for my taste.
