New Gallery Concert

kenjariThis year is starting out with a whirlwind of concert-going. Last Thursday, I attended the New Gallery Concert Series performance in the South End. It was a good concert.
The Old Photo Box - Lior Navok
This piece is an hour-long set of 20 miniatures for solo piano. This performance was an abbreviated one, including only nine of the original twenty. Each movement was wonderfully evocative, so there was a lot of contrasts of mood and character. I particularly enjoyed the warm harmonies and the sense oif humor that came through in a few of the miniatures. I'd really like to hear the whole set sometime.
delete/control/option - Marcos Balter
This was an amazing piece for cello and alto flute, made up entirely of tremolo and harmonic effects. It created a really unique sound world with subtly shifting timbres and melodies that emerged unexpectedly. It was very beautiful and ambient. The two instruments were seamlessly blended such that I often couldn't tell whether one or both players were playing.
An Unfinished Tale - Lin Mu-Xuan
This piece for percussion was quite good, with interesting rhythms and great use of the gong. My enjoyment of the piece was tempered a bit by the prominent use of woodblocks, which are not my favorite percussion sound.
The concert finished up with a two cello and drums trio called the Cello Chix playing a short set of classic rock and jazz songs. They were really good and a lot of fun.
