by Penelope Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald is not a terribly optimistic author, but she does have a keen eye for characters and situations. This novel is about a small motley community living in decrepit houseboats along a stretch of the Thames in London. Over the course of the story, the community gradually breaks up and dissolves due to a series of minor disasters. It's a small, intimate, melancholy novel.
