by David Liss
This solid historical novel is set in Amsterdam in 1659 and concerns Miguel Lienzo, a Portugese Jew. Miguel is a businessman, a trader on the Amsterdam Exchange. He becomes the principal in a complicated scheme to make a killing off of trading in coffee, a relatively new commodity in northern Europe during the 17th century. Miguel's intricate plot brings him into an interesting web of relationships and rivalries in both his personal and business lives. Liss does an excellent job of bringing real suspense and excitement to early stock trading. Miguel is also a clever and likable protagonist who brings life and vigor to the depiction of 17th century Amsterdam and its business world.
