The Sweet Far Thing
by Libba Bray

This is the final volume in the Gemma Doyle trilogy. Gemma and her friends must finally resolve the problem of binding the magic of the realms and of defeating the forces of darkness. They are still largely flying blind, lacking clear information or direction and also lacking people they can trust. When things come to a head, Gemma, Felicity, and Ann end up having to figure it all out as they go along and make some leaps of faith in those around them. It all works out to a bittersweet end, where each of them gets the life they want, but at a cost.
I mostly enjoyed this final book. I do feel that the plot was stretched out a bit longer than necessary. Gemma spends too much time faffing about in the realms with her friends without making any real progress on her quest. If everyone had gotten down to business a bit sooner, the narrative would have been more effective. Still, I liked seeing Gemma, Felicity, and Ann finally find their strength and determination, and their courage at the end was very gratifying.
