The Snapper
by Roddy Doyle

The Snapper is the second of Doyle's Barrytown Trilogy, which I have read completely out of order. In this book, the eldest Rabbitte daughter, Sharon, gets pregnant at the age of 20. She is unmarried but refuses to identify the father. The narrative follows Sharon and her family as they all deal with this unexpected event. But this is no melodrama or Lifetime family movie. Doyle addresses his subject with a lot of humor and warmth. I liked that the family never really rejects Sharon, neither do they treat her pregnancy as some dire crisis. Plus, Doyle's depiction of pregnancy is surprisingly good. The whole book is just grand.
