by Gillian Bradshaw
This fine historical novel is set in northern France at the end of the 11th century, and is based on one of Marie de France's lais. The novel tells the story of Tiarnan, a knight who is also a werewolf, and Marie, a young noblewoman whom Tiarnan rescues from bandits. Marie falls in love with Tiarnan and in turn rescues him when his wife betrays him. Bradshaw does an excellent job of expanding and elaborating the original tale, and in developing the themes of courtly love, honor, loyalty, and justice.
