A Month in the Country
by J. L. Carr

This short, pleasant novel is about a young man home from WWI who spends a summer in a tiny hamlet in the English countryside restoring a medieval wall painting in the village church. Over the course of the summer, he slowly and almost without noticing it begins to heal some of his psychological wounds, returning to life, warmth, humor, and love. It's a very positive book without being sentimental or smarmy.
