I am really glad that this book is the first of a series, because it was so satisfying. Taking place in 17th century Spain, it introduces Captain Diego Alatriste y Tenorio, a brooding swordsman. Beautifully and intelligently written, the story has adventure, intrigue, poetry, and swordfights.
