The Makioka Sisters
by Junichiro Tanizaki

This novel concerns the lives of four sisters in Osaka and Tokyo shortly before World War II. It's a very quiet novel, mainly occupied with the sister's daily lives, the marriage negotiations for Yukiko, the third sister, and the unconventional activities of the youngest sister. The book's focus, though, is the exploration of the sisters' characters and their relationships to each other. It reminded me alot of nineteenth century European novels in a lot of ways, but it was still very Japanese.
