So, does anybody know anything about any of the following schools and/or their locations?

U of Missouri at Kansas City
U of Oregon (Eugene, OR)
U of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana
U of California at Davis
U of Michigan at Ann Arbor

These are places I'm considering for my next round of grad school applications. There are other schools I'm looking at, but these are the ones that I either know the least about compared to the others, or have never been anywhere near. I'm interested in any information anyone might have, even if you don't know anything about their music programs.

Ann Arbor is a funky little outpost of progressive that people in less weird/funky/queer-friendly parts of Michigan will drive quite a way to visit. That's all I know.

That's where most of my (and fajitas') high school end up, downstate at C-U. It's *BIG* and has a lot of folks milling about this college-town-in-the-middle-of-nowhere. Want specifics? Both my siblings went there for 4 years. Give a holler if we can help!

So, Ann Arbor is a gorgeous college town. The joke is that people play the game of trying to find a street corner on which you can't see both a cafe _and_ a bookshop. Plus they have like 8 ice cream stores. Housing is also dirt-cheap.

My great-grandfather was Dean of the Music School at Champaign-Urbana, so I can tell you it was a great program, especially for organists, about 60 years ago, but I don't know anything since then.

UC Davis is a quiet inland UC, with a huge grassy campus that everyone bikes around, an emphasis on agriculture, and a general sense of calm and peacefulness. However, it is a bit isolated. But most people I know who've gone there have enjoyed it.

Hope any of this helps.

Ann Arbor is a nice town -- kinda like Chapel Hill. When I visited briefly, there was a football game vs. Notre Dame and the drunk frat kids were out in force. It did seem like normally a progressive and sweet town, though. Pretty, neat little shops.

I haven't really looked at Davis. It IS small and isolated, but it's about an hour or two from San Francisco. My friend [livejournal.com profile] pixiecrack is going there right now and commuting (which is a horrid pain) from Berkeley. I think it's cheaper than most of the Bay area, and has good food.
