by Matt Ruff
This quite surreal thriller is the story of Jane Charlotte, a woman claiming to be an operative for an organization dedicated to the fight against evil. Specifically, she claims to be a member of the division known as Bad Monkeys, which is responsible for the killing of those who are both irredeemable and under the radar of traditional law enforcement.
Bad Monkeys was a very quick, enjoyable read - lots of excitement and plenty of uncertainty about what's really going on. Is Jane really who she says she is? Is she insane? Is she just a prodigious liar. And Ruff has a terrifically quirky style and sense of humor (one of the organization's divisions is called Scary Clowns). The only misstep is the final plot twist, which didn't quite work for me. On the other hand, I really liked Ruff's take on the differences and similarities between good and evil.
