Other Kenjari and I got to see a sneak preview of Stardust (yes, based on the Neil Gaiman book) last night. I'm happy to report that it was really good. In fact, it filled me with glee, it was so much fun. The casting is very good and so are the performances. Robert DeNiro is particularly delightful as Captain Shakespeare. Kate Magowan (Una) reminded me a lot of [livejournal.com profile] duskydawn. It's also a very pretty movie - it has a classically bright, colorful look that really works with with the fairy-tale nature of the story. The special effects are refreshingly understated, too.

Seriously? I've been seeing the previews on TV this week (one of the two weeks a year I have television) and being shocked at how bad it looked. Maybe I'll go after all...

The TV spots don't do it justice. The ads are very rushed compared to the film, and they don't capture any of the humor or charm.

Sounds good. I'd heard about it.. and you are so lucky to see a screening.
Dinner on Friday maybe? I dropped an e-mail earlier this week, but I think your moving might have eaten it?

Yeah, dinner on Friday would be great. Your e-mail didn't get eaten, I've just been unpacking and organizing (we have *so* much stuff). And okay, I'll admit it, reading Harry Potter.

Harry Potter? Ok. I think that officially everyone on my Flist has now read that book. ;) And I'll drop you an e-mail to setup a time on Fri? (Gotta check with Holly and when she gets out of work.)

YAY

I have been breathless for this movie for ages, so it is nice to see that it was a decent movie. (I'm not expecting it to be rabidly faithful - the captain in the book is not Shakespeare, though the name is so worth it - I just want it to not suck.) I may go order some Tristran and Yvaine now...

But thanks for the review. Much appreciated!

The lack of humor and charm was one of the things that scared me about it, yeah--it came off as generic fantasy action, which is a dead waste of that story. (Others included the "where the heck did that special effect come into the story?" problem, which is admittedly endemic to movie adaptations.) Since I was unquestionably going to get dragooned into seeing it anyway, I'm glad to hear it might not be entirely regrettable. :-)
