Now with even more gamelan action
Jun. 30th, 2007 08:46 pmThe schedule is just as demanding this time as it was two years ago, but the intensity has its advantages.
Today in the gamelan session, I was invited to join in with the Pacific Rim gamelan group for their rehearsals and their part of the performances. They are the group for current U of O graduate composers. They are short one member, and I've had prior gamelan experience. Of course I said yes - the more gamelan playing I get to do, the better.
Composer presentations started today. Some of these folks are really impressive. Plus, they are by and large friendly and interesting to talk to. One of the best things about going to a symposium like this is the opportunity to spend a lot of time with people who share the same musical concerns and interests, and who care about the same things as I do. Being a contemporary composer is very difficult in many ways, and getting to be in this kind of environment for two weeks is encouraging and energizing.
Other Kenjari will be amused that I often find myself playing the role of navigator, because I'm one of the few people here who is familiar with Eugene and has a good sense of direction.
