Other Kenjari and I made an impromptu decision to go see 28 Weeks Later this evening, and I'm really glad we did. It's amazing. Robert Carlyle is very, very good in it. The cinematography and direction are excellent - especially the great and effective use of handheld digital cameras. I also liked the well-placed references to both 28 Days Later and Children of Men.
28 Weeks Later is very much a horror film, and one of the best I've ever seen. It is also absolutely terrifying, relentlessly intense, and truly harrowing. I am not ashamed to say that I nearly passed out during one sequence and had to keep reminding myself to breathe properly at several points after that, despite the fact that I have pretty strong nerves and am not easily disturbed. I highly recommend this movie, but be prepared for the experience.

A. O. Scott's Review of 28 Weeks Later is a marvelous commentary, and I suspect you'll appreciate it even though you've already seen the movie. My favorite part is his explanation of the role of obscenity in the film, in the ratings section at the end, because well, he's right that that's how we rate movies these days. "This movie may warp you for life; oh, and people say naughty words in it!" was K's take on that.

Ok, I'll wait for DVD. I've had to be careful with horror flicks and the larger-than-life audio/visual experience you get in theaters. I saw 28 days later on my little 19" TV, and thought it was great but without any excessive after effects. If I'd seen it on the big screen, I probably would have slept with the light on for a week or so (like when I saw the Grudge).

I never did have the fortitude for zombie movies, since I have a truly ridiculous surprise response, and I mean ridiculous to the point where I cannot be in the room with stupid party games that involve popping freakin' balloons. It makes my chest hurt. (I should get that checked out.)
