Other Kenjari and I spent the long weekend in CT, visiting my parents. It was a very good visit. I had a great time hanging out with Mom and Dad, my brother didn't cause any trouble, and all my hopes for the weekend were fulfilled.
We got our wedding album and other photos, and they are beautiful. Our photographer did an amazing job. This week we will take the large portrait to get framed so that we can display it in our apartment (where is something we'll have to figure out, since we are not allowed to drive nails into the walls).
The weather this weekend was very good, so Other Kenjari and I were able to take several walks. We went to the Arboretum first, and I remember all the reasons why I like that place so much. It's not a terribly large park, but it manages to give the illusion of being much larger than it is, and much farther away from civilization. I guess it's mostly that it is more like natural woods than a landscaped and maintained park. Also, we saw very few other people there. Then we went to Harkness Park, which is right on the ocean. It is, however, a manicured park, complete with an old mansion and formal gardens as well as a beach to walk along. It's pretty, though. And I haven't been able to smell or see the ocean like that since we were in Wales last year for our honeymoon. On Sunday, we just took a short walk around the neighborhood, because it was too nice to stay inside. I felt a little bit nostalgic, noticing how small the place seems when it once formed an entire universe for me.
Mom and I also had plenty of good conversation over many cups of tea. And Dad made potato pancakes for lunch on Sunday. Everyone liked the dinner I cooked for them on Saturday.
My parents managed to surprise me, too. I wore my new sarwal kameez (a traditional Indian outfit I ordered over the web). I expected my parents to find it kind of strange, but they liked the clothing. In fact, I had to show Mom the website, because she is thinking of getting one for herself. Plus, it turns out that both Mom and Dad are fully supportive of gay marriage. This is extra surprising, perhaps even shocking, in my father, since he is actually quite conservative in most of his politics. Yay them!
Overall, we had a really good time. It was the first non-holiday, non-wedding visit I've had with them in a long time.

Not to burst your bubble, but Memorial Day *is* a holiday... ;)

Well, yeah, I guess Memorial Day is a holiday, too. But not the same way that Thanksgiving is. No specific script to follow, as it were. Just an extra day off work.

Ooh, where did you find the sarwal kameez? I've been looking for a nice one, having stupidly not gotten one while in India.

It's www.homeindia.com. I'll e-mail you with some advice on ordering from them.
