by Pearl Buck
This novel about Chinese peasants around the turn of the 20th century was very good and well deserves its reputation. The story follows Wang Lung the farmer and his family as they progress from poverty and obscurity to wealth and stature. Throughout his life, Wang Lung strives for contentment and peace, usually finding it in the land to which he never loses a sense of connection. Buck deftly shows how each step along the road from poverty to wealth provide Wang Lung with its own particular pains and pleasures.
