Yesterday I went to my first professional seminar for my day job. It was an all day affair, but the speaker was really good. He was from North Dakota, and had the very distinct accent of those parts (similar to that found in Minnesota).
The best part of the seminar, though, was the location: the EMC club at Fenway Park. It's very swanky. Before the seminar got started, while having breakfast, I spent a lot of time looking out over the field. I have to admit to be a total fangirl - gazing out at the green monster, all I could think about was all the balls that David Ortiz has hit over that wall to win the game. Wheil I was sipping my tea and looking out the window, I was making small talk with other attendees about the park, the Red Sox, and baseball. There was one guy who was suggesting the the Red Sox establishment would be better served by tearing down Fenway and building something newer and slicker out by the shore (perish the thought). At the time I thought he had a kind of weirdly negative attitude about the park. Sure, if at some future time, the management wanted a newer facility, well, it would be sad, but I would hope that they'd leave Fenway standing, because it's got such rich history. You might as well tear down Old North Church or paint over the Sargent murals at the Boston Public Library. During the compliemntary tour we got at the end of the seminar, this guy admitted to being a Yankees fan. And I thought to myself, well, that explains it.
The tour was pretty good, even though we couldn't go out into the stands or onto the field because of the weather and construction. We did get to go up to the press box, however. Those sportscasters sure are lucky - the location is perfect and you can even open the windows. Fenway has got a lot of history; our guide had some great stories to tell about the park.
