I think the mini dress rehearsal
pantsie and I had at Dr. Bell's house on Friday afternoon really helped the performance on Saturday. We didn't do as good a job with his piece on Friday as we did at the concert, but it still did wonders for my confidence because we still didn't completely fall apart. I came out of there thinking that if that was how we did when we were nervous and less than ideally warmed up, we had nothing to worry about for the next day. Plus, Dr. Bell had very kind praise for my own song, which we also played for him. It's strange how even after all this time the approval of a teacher can mean so much.
I was so nervous about the Bach that we decided to have
epilimnion remain seated next to the piano for that piece, even though she didn't have to to turn any pages for me, because I felt that her presence was a steadying influence.
pantsie and I worked damn hard to get this performance together, so it's extremely gratifying to both have it go well and to have so many people come and genuinely enjoy the performance.
One of the audience members came up to me after the concert and told me, with a beautiful Irish accent, that during the concert she felt as if she'd already died and gone to heaven. :)
I'm not sure very many people really got Caverns, but I was tremendously happy to finally give it a performance, partly because it's so different from what I usually write. It's one of my rare modernistic, mostly atonal pieces - when I played it for epilimnion, she asked me if it was Webern.
I'm really glad that
hca had her Lord Peter Wimsey viewing party after the recital. Not only is eating good food and watching DVDs about all I'm capable of after a performance, but being able to hang out with so many wonderful people was a great follow up to such an intense experience. It allowed me to ease out of that heightened state without any emotional let-down.
