Other Kenjari and I went to see Children of Men last night. It's extremely good, and I highly recommend it. The performances and direction are superb, and the story is very thought-provoking. It's quite intense and even harrowing at times. The version of the future portrayed is somewhat disturbing for both its brutal bleakness and its resemblance to the present. I especially liked the way the film raises questions and issues, but doesn't give complete answers or explanations for them - even the ending is rather open-ended. It rarely takes the easy way out and isn't afraid of complexity. It's definitely a movie I'll want to see again, and one I'll be thinking about for a long time.

I agree. I went and saw it with my friends on Friday and we were talking about it for hours after it was over.

I think (maybe i'm wrong) that i'm in a minorty of people who have actually read the novel this was based on before seeing the film. It was years ago and I really didn't remember much but the basic plot points but i had a good idea what the deal was before even walking into the theatre.

So what i'm curious about is, how did the premise of the film overall come off to people who had not been exposed to the novel? Were there surprises? Things that didn't make sense? Things that might have been surprises but were spoiled by the ads?
