Some time ago, [livejournal.com profile] zfarcher gave me the letter H, to choose 10 words and write about them. I didn't forget, I just had other things that needed attention first. So here are 10 words starting with the letter H and what they mean to me.

Harmony
It's one of the fundamental aspects of music, along with pitch and rhythm. Harmony is the most codified aspect, at least in western art music, which also makes it the most studied and analyzed aspect. My personal approach to harmony in my composition is not very common-practice or formalized. I tend to be more idiosyncratic, coming up with a collection of chords/sounds I like and then feeling my way around them in the course of putting together a piece. I tend to work with harmony in a more intuitive way rather than analytically.

History
I've always liked history. It was a favorite subject of mine in school right up through college. Even now, I'm very much into it, although I'm not a serious historian by any means. I like visiting historical sites and reading historical fiction. My favorite periods are the middle ages and renaissance, although I'm also quite fond of antiquity and the baroque era.

Hagiography
I'm not at all religious, yet I'm terribly fascinated by saints and their stories. Sometimes I even find some of the stories terribly amusing - there's a certain irony in the connections between a saint's sufferings and the method of their martyrdom and what they become the patron of. Some part of this fascination must come from my liking for art - there are many, many paintings throughout history that feature saints and their symbols. And possibly also from my predilection for fairy tales, fantasy, and magical realism: saint's lives are rife with dragons, maidens locked in towers, miraculous healings, mystical visions, and miracles.

Haiku
It's a great form of poetry. I love the mixture of brevity and profundity, simplicity and depth. The best haiku convey layers and even worlds of meaining with one or two simple images.

Hair
Good hair is incredibly attractive to me. I love long hair on myself and others. I also love the intricate hairstyles prevalent in the renaissance and 19th century, even though I can't get my hair to cooperate enough to try any of them on myself.

Hug
Hugs are the most versatile form of affection - they can be applied in almost any kind of relationship and can convey a wide range of sentiments. They are appropriate in just about any setting or on any occasion. Hugs are great to both give and receive.

Harpsichord
To be honest, I find that the sound of a harpsichord gets wearing pretty quickly. However, they are great fun to play - they have a spongy, bouncy feel that is quite a contrast to the feel of both the piano and the organ. As you would expect, baroque music is especially delightful to play on the harpsichord.

Humor
How would we ever get through life without a sense of humor? A good laugh is one of pleasures of life. One of the things I love about Other Kenjari is his sense of humor, which is both dark and twisted and cute and silly - sometimes at the same time. He's one of the few people who can make me laugh hysterically both consistently and often.

Hearth
I like all the warm, comforting things that this word brings to mind. A cozy fire to curl up in front of, warmth and cooking, the idea of home.

Holiday
I think holidays are a very important part of any culture or religion. As someone I knew once said, "what's the point of a religion without holidays?". I think setting aside several days throughout the year to celebrate or commemorate events, people, or ideas, is a wonderful thing. This is equally important in both religious and secular contexts. If you don't make a point of paying attention to what's important, how will you ever remember what those important things are? Plus, there's also a great deal of value in breaking the routine, of stepping out of one's usual schedule, to give attention to something else. Holidays help shape time in way that I think is of great psychological and spiritual value. Speaking of which...

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, Joyous Solstice, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to you all.
