by Michael Chabon
Michael Chabon is just as good at kids' books as he is at ones for grown-ups. Summerland is about 11-year-old Ethan Feld and his friends Jennifer T. and Thor, who all live on a small island in Puget Sound and spend their summers playing baseball. Their island, however, abuts the Summerlands, which are alot like fae-land, except with the addition of Norse and Native American Mythology as well as American folklore. Ethan and his friends become involved in the quest to stop Coyote from bringing about Ragged Rock, otherwise known as the end of the world. The book is a wonderful mix of baseball and fantasy, and is reminiscent of the Narnia books. I had a great time reading it.
