Movie Weekend
Jun. 25th, 2006 08:52 pmOn Friday night, Other Kenjari and I watched Fearless, the new Jet Li movie. It's not out in theaters yet, but we were able to get a Chinese import DVD at our local comic shop (yes, it plays in American devices and yes, it has subtitles). It's quite good - way better than any of the Hollywood productions he's been in. Why is it that American directors just don't get it? The movie is the story of Huo YuanJia, a Wu Shu artist at the turn of the century who founded the Jin Wu sports federation. The fight scenes are breathtaking, and the story is pretty good, too. Its US release is scheduled for August 4th.
Last night we saw Cars, which we both loved. The story is on the familiar side - hotshot learns the values of friendship and to appreciate the simple things in life - but it is extremely well executed. And the visuals are jaw-droppingly good. Pixar has gotten really good at rendering trees and water. Stay through the end credits, because there are a few hilarious bits referencing other Pixar films.
