This quiet book concerns Edith Hope, a 40ish woman sent off by her friends to an elegant, genteel Swiss hotel in the wake of a small scandal. At the hotel, Edith meets and interacts with the other guests, mostly other women, and gradually leanrs about their characters and lives. The book is thus centered not around events, but around astute observations of people, both witty and poignant. I found it oddly delightful to read, and thoroughly charming.
