Movies I have Seen Recently
Jul. 31st, 2005 10:39 pmOkay, there are only two.
Other Kenjari and I went to the midnight showing of Steamboy at Coolidge Corner a couple of weeks ago. The animation was beautiful, but Otomo (the animator/writer, etc.) is just a little too interested in blowing things up. The story is a cautionary nineteenth century steampunk tale and had a lot of potential. But it seemed that every time I got interested in a gadget or machine, it blew up. And every time I got fascinated by some plot or character development, it was truncated in favor of blowing more stuff up. The action was good, but it would have been even better if it wasn't structured around massive explosions. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, though. Otomo's most well-known work is Akira.
Today we went out for a really early matinee of Sky High. It's good-natured, fun fluff about a high school for superheroes. Bruce Campbell has a great part as the gym teacher - I think he was my favorite thing about the movie. All the actors loooked like they were having a great time, too.
