Brazen and the Beast
by Sarah MacLean

This historical romance is set largely in the grittier, less respectable side of London. Hattie Sedley is the smart, determined spinster daughter of a wealthy shipping magnate. Accepting the fact that she is not the kind of woman her wealthy peers find marriageable, she is determined to take over the family business. However, despite her skill and interest, her gender presents a formidable barrier. When Harriet finds Whit, otherwise known as the Beast, tied up in her carriage one evening, they are immediately attracted to each other. As they strike a deal for business and pleasure, deeper feelings come into play.
Brazen and the Beast was a very satisfying romance. I loved Hattie - she's brash, intelligent, determined, and a little wounded from years of rejection. Yet despite her insecurities, she continues to strive for what she desires, knowing she deserves it. Whit is a very appealing hero. He's quiet but full of intensity. I loved how everything about Hattie that she's been told is not quite attractive, Whit loves and is impressed by. Their relationship develops quickly, but never feels shallow. It's also very, very hot.
