by Daryl Gregory
This horror novel is a creepy tale of the southern gothic with just a bit of Lovecraftian horror mixed in. The story centers around Stella, the one-time Revelator for her family's strange cultish religion. This status is due to her ability to commune with a strange and alien creature that dwells in a cave in the woods near the family home. Years ago, Stella left the family and the cult, but she returns for her grandmother's funeral and for the sake of the girl her grandmother has been raising in the family faith.
Revelator isn't super scary until the very ending, which packs quite a punch. It's more creepy and strange than terrifying. It's about the weird, uncanny, dangerous things in this world and the unhealthy ways people sometimes relate to them. It's about the darker sides of religion and family. It's about keeping things hidden from the rest of the world and what that hiding costs us and gets us.
