This historical romance is set at a genteel London boarding house. Ambitious American Hugh Cassidy is staying there for his sojourn in the city. Lady Lillias Vaughn and her family are living there while their townhouse undergoes urgent repairs. Hugh is driven, down to earth, and surprisingly gentle. Lillias is very intelligent and observant and has a bit of a rebellious streak that has made her just a little bit extra underneath her proper facade. Hugh and Lillias are powerfully attracted to each other and the sparks fly. They engage in a witty battle of wills across the drawing room and their relationship eventually fully ignites.
This one was a bit slow to get going. It took a little longer than I would have liked for Lillias and Hugh's relationship to progress beyond lustful attraction, but once it did, it was very satisfying. They come to truly see and understand each other in a way that kind of sneaks up on both them and the reader. I also liked the balance of blinding passion and real, tender caring. Also, the way Hugh navigates a complication and hurdle to their happily ever after is breathtakingly beautiful.
