Someone to Honor
by Mary Balogh

This is the sixth historical romance in the Westcott series. Abby has spent the last six years figuring out who she is and what she wants out of life after her and her siblings are dispossessed by the posthumous discovery of their father's bigamy. When Abby's brother Harry returns to their childhood home in the country to convalesce from his war wounds, Abby stays with him, as she has no taste for the upper crust season and its marriage mart. Harry's army friend Gil Bennington is also staying with him while he also recuperates from army life and prepares for a custody battle with his in-laws over the daughter he and his late wife had together. Abby and Gil start off on the wrong foot, but they grow to like each other and to admit their attraction. When Harry proposes a marriage of convenience between the two, they agree to it. As they face the difficulties of Gil's court case and the class differences between them, a true and deep love grows.
Someone to Honor is a very slow and subtle burn of a romance. Gil and Abby come to love each other after their marriage and their feelings develop with almost no fanfare or passionate gestures. It's all very quiet. The real drama and conflict come from the custody case and the adjustment to the class differences. I liked the themes of choosing and fighting for what you want and what you love, and I found both Gil and Abby likeable, and their relationship was a good one. I just wish that the romance hadn't been quite so subtle and quiet.
