by Katherine Addison
This sequel to Witness for the Dead finds Thara Celehara investigating the poisoning of a elderly noblewoman, which leads him to the shady goings on at a school for foundlings. The mystery plots are interesting, but not too hard to solve. The real strength of the book is the relationships among the characters and the ways the mysteries illuminate them. Thara is wonderful - he's good at his work and very compassionate towards the people he serves. I love his developing friendships with his opera composer friend and his new apprentice. I hope there are more in this series.
