Someone to Trust
by Mary Balogh

This is the fifth in the Westcott series of historical romances. In this one, the widowed Elizabeth Overfield and Colin Handrich slowly fall in love, almost without noticing it, after Colin's sister and Elizabeth's brother marry. The only thing standing in their way is 19th century hang-ups about Elizabeth being nine years older than Colin. When a scandal erupts around them, it could either drive them apart or bring them together. This is a romance novel, so it's clearly the latter.
Someone to Trust had a much lighter emotional touch than most of the other books in the series. Elizabeth's deceased husband was an abusive alcoholic and Colin's mother is a beauty-obsessed narcissist, but the they have both largely already overcome these traumas at the beginning of their romance. The main conflict is instead to do with following what is considered proper and correct versus following one's heart. It's a very sweet romance, with a hero and heroine who are both very admirable and likable. It's refreshing how low-angst the relationship ultimately is, despite the scandal and past trauma - it's nice to have a story where the main characters have very real traumas but are those traumas are not the drivers of the plot.
